Noise-Canceling Headphones

Gizmo Gadgets: Wireless Headphones

Noise-canceling headphones are headphones that have microphones on the outside to capture the ambient soundwaves. They play an inverted version of that sound back into your ears, canceling out the ambient music creating the impression of silence around the listener. The effect is most pronounced and most effortless to accomplish with moderately low frequencies (due to their long wavelengths), so they are trendy with people who fly frequently. They are less effective with voices, but the more advanced models will also provide some canceling for voices.

It’s an awesome thing to be able to hear my music well on an airplane without having to turn it up to dangerous levels. If you fly regularly, then they are definitely worth the investment.

Types Of This Devices

There are two main types of noise-canceling headphones, the closed cap type use sealing and insulation to block ambient noise, well-built ones work fine, but comfort is an issue, no venting means hot and clammy.

Recent developments use a microphone placed external to the cap, ambient noise gets recorded, and a microchip filters out the frequency of the outside sound; of course, the same frequency in the “good sound” is also canceled, so there is a compromise.

You get what you pay for, so the top of the range unit will almost certainly give you a better filtering system; the technology is still in development and gets better every day.

In noisy environments, vehicles, aircraft, trains, etc., I am inclined to use earphones rather than headphones because the buds provide an excellent filter for outside noise at a fraction of the cost.
